Taking a Calcium Supplement

October 8th, 2007 . by admin

What is the big deal with calcium supplements and why are they so important?

Supplements of calcium are taken when people don’t get enough calcium from the food they eat. Getting enough calcium is very crucial because it is important to the function of our body. It helps the function of nerve impulses, regulates our heartbeat, is important in blood clotting, and helps build and maintain healthy bones. As you can see, getting a good amount of calcium in our diet is important.

We have to continue to put calcium in our body because we can’t produce it by ourselves. Our body loses calcium every day. This loss occurs from nail loss, sweating, skin being shed, and hair. So taking a supplement to get the calcium we need will help dramatically. Calcium is found in plenty of foods, so it is possible to get all of your calcium that way instead of taking a supplement.

When you decide to use a supplement or change your diet to get calcium, there is a ton of information about calcium intakes and their sources. Studies have shown that adults men and women should get 1000-1200 mg.

You need to use a supplement only when you aren’t consuming enough calcium through your diet. If you aren’t getting enough through the foods you eat, talk to your doctor to make sure a supplement is a good decision for you and they will help you pick the right one. Even though you don’t need a prescription for them it is a good idea to get your doctor’s input on the matter.
