Low Carb Diets and Vitamins

July 19th, 2007 . by admin

Much of the low carb diets tell people that they need to eat less fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. These contain carbohydrates and eating less will certainly keep your weight down, but it will also leave a deficiency of needed vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

This means that someone on a low carb diet needs to start using supplements. If you are on a low carb diet or thinking about beginning the diet here are some nutrients you will probably need to supplement.

-Vitamin C

It is found in citrus fruits, berries, fruit juice, fresh
vegetables, potatoes, and tomatoes. A good amount of Vitamin C will help iron to absorb better, maintain healthy blood vessels, and may prevent cancer.

-Vitamin E

It is found in green leafy vegetables, vegetable oils,
some cereals, nuts, and wheat germ. It is known to help maintain healthy skin and prevent cancer and heart disease.

-Fiber

It is found in vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and whole grains. A good amount of fiber will help to keep your colon healthy and prevent colon cancer. An intake of 20-35 grams per day has been shown to prevent and relieve constipation and also keep weight loss steady.

If you are on a low carb diet you probably should take a supplement that has these nutrients in them. They will provide you with the nutrients you need and help you lose weight. It would be wise to figure out what nutrients you are lacking and then look for a multivitamin that targets that area.

You may also need to have a fiber supplement to keep you regular and keep your colon healthy.

If you don’t know what nutrients that you lack in your diet, you should see a nutritionist or go see your doctor.
